History of the South London Inter Faith Group

1981 Founded by Brian Pearce and Ivor Smith-Cameron

1991 Amalgamated with the Wandsworth and Merton Inter Faith Group (WMIFG)
WMIFG had started as a small informal group in 1975

1991 Eric Bramsted became Secretary
Eric had been Secretary of WMIFG since 1986
1992 Adrian Arnold joined Eric Bramsted as joint Secretary

1997 The first South London Inter Faith Walk took place in Streatham in July

1999 Sarah Thorley became Secretary

2000 First Vigil of Prayer for Peace on 6 November at St Matthew’s Brixton

2001 A formal constitution was adopted in March, and membership of the Inter Faith Network for the United Kingdom was confirmed in July

2005 Successfully applied for funding to the Faith Communities Capacity Building Fund (FCCBF)

2006 Alan Gadd became Secretary

2007 The website was launched at www.southlondoninterfaith.org.uk and the FCCBF-funded reports by Sarah Thorley and Siriol Davies were published

2009 A revised constitution with minor changes was adopted, reflecting a new emphasis on partnership with other inter faith organisations in South London

2009 Monthly lunch meetings started at Streatham Friends Meeting House

2010 Scriptural Explorations meetings were held with texts on a chosen theme from the sacred writings of nine faiths selected and presented.

2011 Rashid Laher became Secretary

2012 Twelve inter faith walks took place on 14 and 15 July, all across South London, shortly before the Olympics and Paralympics

2013 Exhibitions entitled ‘Walking and Talking: 16 years of inter faith walks in South London‘ were mounted at Southwark Cathedral in July and at City Hall in November.

2016 Phillipe Cotgreave de Rahman became Secretary
